30 Interesting Facts about Earth

How well do we know our planet?

 https://techspireme.blogspot.com/

1. The actual shape of Earth is not a sphere but an oblate spheroid or Geoid. This shape is similar to a sphere, but the poles are flattened and the equator bulges (due to rotation).

2. It is the Molten Iron Core layer of the Earth that Creates a Magnetic Field on Earth.

3. The surface of the Earth is divided in to tectonic plates that float on the rocky mantle.

4. The inside of the Earth is very active with mountain formations, volcanoes and earth quakes occurring along the boundaries of tectonic plates.

5. Earth has less craters on the surface (compared to moon and few other planets) due to it's geological activities (like volcanoes & earth quakes) and movement of tectonic plates.

6. Earth revolves around the sun in its orbit at a speed of 67,000 mph (107,826 km/h)

7. The Earth is 4.5 billion year old.  1 billion = 1,000,000,000 or 109

8. The hottest temperature ever measured on Earth is 56.7 Degree Centigrade (134 Degrees Fahrenheit) recorded in the Death valley, California.

9. The coldest temperature ever measured on Earth is Minus 73 Degree centigrade (Minus 100 Degree Fahrenheit) measured on Vostok Station, Antarctica.

10. The Earth's magnetic North pole has moved more than 1,100 Kilometers (600 miles) towards the north since the early 19th century.

11.  The mid ocean ridge is the longest mountain chain on Earth.

12. The Mariana Trench is the deepest point in the ocean on the planet Earth.

13. The Dead sea is the lowest point on land below sea level.

14. Lightning strikes somewhere on Earth approximately 100 times per second i.e. about 8.6 Million times in a day.

15. Earth mostly is made up of 32.1 % of  iron, 30.1% of oxygen, 15.1% of silicon, and 13.9% of magnesium. And more than 70% of Earth is covered with water. Hence it is called the Blue planet but only 3% out of 70% of water is fresh, the remaining 67% is salty.

16. Earth's atmosphere extends up to 10000 Kms and it is the thickest in the first 50 kms (approx).

17.  Earth actually takes only 23 Hours, 56 minutes and 4 seconds to rotate about its own axis but the movement of sun adds up 3 minutes and 56 seconds to its revolving time and hence we have 24 hours in a day.

As per the news today, in future we would probably have 25 hours in a day as high tides caused by moon are leading to an hour more necessary for the Earth to rotate about it's own axis.

 18. A year on Earth is not exactly 365 days but 365.2564 days. This extra 0.2564 days is the reason we have a leap year every 4 years with one day extra (i.e. 29th of February).

19. As of now Earth is the only planet proven to have atmosphere conducive for life.

20. Earth's radius is 6,400,000 meters (6,999,125 yards). and weighs around 5.972 × 10^24 kg. (Weight calculated using radius as distance). Earth gains around 40,000 Tons of weight every year due to dust (accumulated due to gravity from formations of solar system).

Imagine what would be the total weight of the Earth with all the species and human population! 😵

21.  Earth is the only planet in our solar system that is not named after any Greek or Roman God. The name Earth is derived from German and old English combination of 'Ertha'  and 'Eor(th)e' meaning ground.

22.  It would take you 42 minutes to reach from one end of the Earth to the other side through a straight tunnel through it.

23. Solar eclipses happen only on Earth in our solar system.

24. One sixth of Earth's land surface is legally owned by the queen of the U.K.

25. Water exists in all the three forms (solid, liquid and gaseous states) only on Earth.

26. The 22nd of April (of every year) is marked as World Earth Day.

27. The Earth's axis of rotation is tilted by more than 23 degrees. This fact results in the occurrence of the 4 seasons in a year.

28. Water vapor is mainly responsible for much of Earth's weather conditions. Because of the water vapor Earth is not clearly visible from the outer space.

29. Earth  is at a distance of 149.6 million km from the Sun. It is the third planet from the sun.

30. Last but not the least, Earth is a very beautiful, unique and precious planet with great Biodiversity (variety of species), plantations and trees and many rare and common treasures. Let us all save our Earth from the upcoming doom due to pollution and other factors by taking appropriate measures and doing our part in the whole.

Types of programming languages | Software

Hi, Lets get going further in to the basics of computers. For those of you who are new to this blog, I recommend you to go through part - 1 of the basics before going ahead with this post. Here is the link to part-1: https://techspireme.blogspot.in/2018/04/basics-of-computers.html We have already read from part 1 that Software is a set of applications. Software is basically of two types: 1. System software: software required to start up the system i.e the Operating System software (by booting - a process named Boot Strap Loader loads the operating system from the Hard disk drive to the working memory RAM) 2. Application software: Software designed for a specific purpose that is a collection of programs. Application software always runs on the top of system software. Examples of Application software are: word processors like notepad, wordpad A suite of applications like MS Office Media players (VLC etc) and many more. System software is the base on which applicat...

Types of Computers

Based on the size, computing power and capabilities, the computers are divided in to several types. Let us have a look at these ranking from top to low. 1. Super Computer The fastest and extremely fast computer capable of execution hundreds of millions of instructions per second (MIPS) is called a Super computer. They are highly expensive (around 50-100 million dollars to a few billion dollars) and most powerful.  It can execute n* 10 power 10 to n* 10 power 50 operations per second ex. the NASA super computer Pleiades can execute 5.95 to 7.25 petaflops per second.  1petaflop = one thousand million million = 10 power 15 floating-point operations per second - FLOPS) The super computers are used in research purposes and in intense calculations like weather forecast, Earth quake studies, nuclear reactors & simulations, Astro physics, complex scientific operations etc. NASA uses super computers to launch satellites, rockets and for space exploration. Everything about computers

Hi, I am quite excited to start the technical part of my blog! I hope so are you! Let's start with the Abc of computers that we all find a bit hard to put in to words. These are my own definitions made really simple and easy to understand! Computer:   An electronic device that computes, stores, processes , manipulates and displays the data. Coined from the term "compute", means to calculate. Facts:  First ever computer was used for mathematical calculations. Founder: Charles Babbage - The Father of computers - invented the first ever mechanical computer called "Babbage's Analytical Engine"! Features of a Computer / Advantages of computer over a calculator: Speed, Accuracy, Storage, Multi tasking, Diligence (and many more). A computer comprises of Software and Hardware (all the physical - internal or external components/peripherals that are connected to or a part of computer ex. Keyboard, Mouse, Cabinet, Joystick, USB - pen drive etc. that we c...
